Nokia slips in phone shipments, still holds on to first place
Nokia may have lost the smartphone title belt to Apple and Samsung, but it has managed to hang on to the top slot for general phone shipments worldwide. Despite still being in first place, Nokia's market share did take a 29 percent nosedive in Q2 2011.
Globally, mobile phone shipments grew 13 percent from Q2 last year, with 361 million units shipped by manufacturers. Amazingly, Apple was the breakout performer in Q2, as it shipped 20.3 million phones in Q2. Remember, Apple only sells smartphones, and only two models at that, so its fourth place in the global cellphone market is all that much more remarkable.
Nokia's shipments dipped below 100 million in Q2, settling at 88.5 million, 22.6 million less than last year. Its market share was 24.5 percent, compared to the 34.7 percent it held last year. Samsung was nipping at the heels of Nokia, with its 74 million shipments and 20.5 percent market share, thanks to the success of its smartphone department. LG held on to the third place slot, despite it shipping fewer phones this year and losing 2.7 percentage points of market share.
If Apple continues its trend, and the rumored launch of the next generation iPhone in September should only help it do so, it could knock LG out of third place without too much effort. [via Strategy Analytics]
